Habi Center for Environmental Rights is very pleased for the historical court order of the Federal High Court of Nigeria .
the court order established a precedent by including the right to clean air as an integral part of the constitutional right for freedom and dignity .
The court ordered the shell petroleum development company to stop the gas flaring in the Niger Delta . this court order is also an example of positive and effective civil society participation . the case was brought to court through local communities and supported by Environmental Rights Action/Friends of The Earth Nigeria . without this cooperation and effective role of local communities and civil society , this court order would have not been issued .
Habi Center for Environmental Rights is supporting Environmental Rights Action/Friends of The Earth Nigeria in its pursuit to execute the court order .
Habi Center for Environmental Rights is expressing its regret for the failure of Shell Petroleum Development Company to execute the court order . we are calling for the Nigerian Government to put pressure on the company to execute the court order .
