The HCER is campaigning against the increasing spread of cell phone reception and transmission stations. These stations are not environmental compliant and are spreading within residential areas which will induce adverse environmental and negative health impacts.
The HCER has received a complaint from the one of the citizens who has been negatively affected from one of these stations on the roof top of his dwelling in the Cairo neighborhood of Helmeit El Zatoun. He has been experiencing hearing buzzing noises and from vibrations in the walls and doors of his apartment due to this station. Accordingly, the HCER filled an official complaint at the Ain Sham Police Station. The complaint number was 480 for the year 2005. The district attorney accordingly issued a request to the National Institute for Standards and Calibration to conduct the necessary measurements in the citizen's apartment. The results of the measurements confirmed the citizen's allegations and asserted the negative environmental impacts of the station on the citizen and his family.
Additionally, the HCER has filed the following complaints:
to the National Authority of Communications dated January 30, 2005,
to H.E. the Minister of State for Environmental Affairs dated January 31, 2005,
to H.E. the Governor of Cairo dated February 7, 2005, and to Central Department for Environmental Affairs at the Ministry of Health dated February 15, 2005.
The facts about the negatives effects of these stations are very established. These include effects on the joints, and the digestive and urinary systems. Accordingly, the HCER requests that all concerned and responsible authorities to take into effect the signed protocol between the Ministry of Environment and the cell phones operating companies regarding the study of the environmental impact assessment of these stations located in the middle of the residential areas. The HCER also calls for NGO's and citizens to confront this problem through legal channel. The HCER is also willing to provide all needed support such legal proceeding.
